José A. Zayas-Cabán
currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana, where he received a
Performer’s Diploma from the University of Indiana’s Jacobs
School of Music (May 2009).
He holds a Master of Music Degree from the University of
Minnesota (2007), as well as Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of
Arts degrees from Truman State University (2005).
José is a graduate of Hickman High School (2001).
While at the University of Minnesota, José performed with
the Four Corners Saxophone Quartet, which became a semifinalist
in the Fischoff Chamber Group Competition.
He later was invited to play with the World of Winds
Orchestra under the direction of Christian Lindberg.
At Indiana University, José has performed with the
Symphony Orchestra, directed by Arthur Fagen.
Also, he was a member of the Indiana University Graduate
Saxophone Quartet, which was awarded Alternate to the Music
Teachers National Association final round.
José’s primary teachers include Randall Smith, Eugene
Rousseau, and Otis Murphy. He
has also taken part in the European University for Saxophone in
Gap, France, where he studied with Claude Delangle, Vincent
David, Arno Bornkamp, Christian Wirth, Jean-Denis Michat and
Julian Petit.
José is an instructor at the Stafford Music Academy in
Bloomington, Indiana, and performs and teaches in his native
Puerto Rico, as well as in Missouri.
He currently plays Alto Saxophone with the Missouri
Saxophone Quartet.
