History

The language of music joins people across all demographic lines.  Individuals from all walks of life become one entity when playing music together - and when listening together.

The Columbia Community Band comprises more than 70 volunteer musicians who perform for the sheer love of music.  Our audiences comprise many more music lovers, who gather to experience the delight of live performance.

In the last quarter-century, the CCB has become one f the Midwest's premier symphonic concert bands.  Butch Antal, a trumpeter who played with the Henry Mancini Orchestra and other professional bands, formed the CCB in 1981 as a part of the Columbia Public Schools Adult Education Program.  Alan Nellis conducted the group from 1986 to 1988, followed by Keith House, who served as music director from 1989 to 2005.  The Band's current music director, John Patterson, directed the award-winning Hickman High School Band for over 30 years and is a member of the Missouri Bandmasters Hall of Fame.

The CCB was the first concert band to play in the Historic Missouri Theater and the first to perform at the International Scott Joplin Festival in Sedalia.  The Missouri Bandmasters Association has invited the band to perform at their annual convention as have the Missouri Educators Association and the Association of Concert Bands.  The Band expanded its performance venues in 1999 with a 10-day concert tour through England and Scotland.

In 2006, The Columbia Community Band observes its 25th birthday.  Please join us for a series of concerts and small ensemble performances, as we celebrate our role, and yours,  in embracing the spirit of music in Mid-Missouri.
